Car hire
Generally speaking, you can book a hire car for your individual holiday plans in all larger towns in Germany. You can find providers and comparative prices at www.billiger-mietwagen.de
Banks
Opening times can vary a little from bank to bank but most banks are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. In rural areas, many banks close at lunchtime. However, most banks have automatic terminals at which you can withdraw cash or transfer money from your account.
Dispensing chemist’s / pharmacies
Pharmacies usually have the same opening times as other shops, i.e. on weekdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is always one pharmacy in any given area which is open around the clock to deal with emergencies.
If you need medicine urgently, look up Apotheken Notdienst in a local paper to find out which is your nearest emergency pharmacy. Additionally, all pharmacies have a card displayed on their door giving the addresses of the nearest emergency pharmacies. Emergency pharmacies are open all round the clock. You may have to ring a bell to summon the pharmacist. Please note that if you purchase medicines at night or over the weekend, a surcharge is often levied.
Shops and shopping
Shop opening times vary in Germany. As a rule, shops in towns open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., many until 8 p.m.; on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In rural areas other opening times are often in operation. However, you will always find the shops open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. At the weekends, a few shops are closed. Filling stations offer a 24-hour service seven days a week.
