A landscape just as beautiful as it has always been.

In 2003, our Mecklenburg ice-age landscape was declared National Geopark: 4,880 sq km of protected nature. With its marshlands, moors and large expanses of woodland and water, it is the home of a great variety of plant and animal species.
The waterways offer nesting places for the now rare sea eagle and are a real paradise for countless water birds, otters and beavers. The great yellow oilseed rape fields set against rich green meadows and interspersed with the many “eyes of blue” – the lakes and round, end-moraine ponds.

Our landscape can also be smelled and heard. The sense of smell is bewitched by fields in blossom, the scent of new-mown hay and the earthy smell of freshly ploughed fields in autumn. And in spring and autumn one can hear the trumpeting voices of the great shy cranes, the loud cries of the lapwing, the clatter of stork beaks, the cackle of thousands of geese who gather in the fields in autumn, ready to migrate to warmer climes.

Each season offers a treasure trove for the nature lover to discover Lying in the middle of Mecklenburg, this region is also a good base from which to explore the whole of the Federal State. Numerous well-signposted footpaths and cycleways are an invitation to discover and enjoy a distinctive landscape. Perhaps you might decide to drive along the beautiful ancient country avenues still lined by trees on both sides, which are a northern continuation of the German Avenue Route and fascinate visitors with their chiaroscuro effects. Visit the “Thousand-Year-Old Oak Trees of Ivenack” and contemplate the millennium of European history through which they have lived; wander through the landscape gardens and the castle parks. Or go on an excursion to one or other of the ancient Hanseatic cities of Rostock, Stralsund, Wismar or Greifswald. Berlin and Hamburg are also within easy reach for sightseeing and a host of other things.
