The past and present of Mecklenburg find their reflection in many festivities and living traditions. Historical monuments in stone often form the impressive backdrop for traditional-costume festivities and public festivals, concerts and theatre performances. Allow yourself to be enticed back into the past by visiting the Renaissance castle of Güstrow or other castles, such as Schloss Basedow, Burg Klempenow, or Burg Schlitz, and admire the skill of those who built them.

A special highlight is the Musiksommer / Summer of Music with numerous concerts in small village churches, castles, manor houses and converted barns. Every year the Reuter Festival is held in Stavenhagen to pay tribute to the Low-German writer Fritz Reuter in the town of his birth. Low-German, a language most closely related to Dutch, is much in evidence at the festival

At Whitsun, artists and craftspeople hold open days in their studios and workshops. You can acquaint yourself with the life and work of the great sculptor Barlach in the Ernst-Barlach-Museum in Güstrow, and in the Thünen-Museum in Tellow you can learn about the economic theorist and agricultural scholar Heinrich von Thünen.
Among other things, Malchin is known as a place where motor bike racing enthusiasts traditionally meet; at Whitsun they congregate at the grass-track hill circuit in Teterow.

Art Open to the Public
This promotion begins at Whitsun every year. Many of the studios are open all year round.
