The Mecklenburg Ice-Age landscape throws open a viewing panel through which you can look back over the last 25,000 years of geological history. Scarcely any other place in Europe offers such a representative view of the landscape formation brought about by the last Ice-Age.

The end moraine ridges stretch out in curving chains of hills across the countryside; the sand and gravel banks fall gently into the valleys, where lakes and rivers collected the melt water of the glaciers. Here, in an area covering 4,800 sq km, you can find examples of geological history which bring to life the geological model of the glacial series, from the ground moraine to the glacial valley.

The great erratic blocks or boulders once deposited by melting glaciers look as if they have dropped out of the sky, for there are no rock formations at all on this terrain. For our distant ancestors they were cult objects. Our forebears built megalithic graves with them, and celebrated fertility rites. Later, they were said to possess occult powers in the black magic of witchcraft. These unsolicited presents from Scandinavia weighing several tonnes are to be found scattered all over the local landscape. The erratics garden at Schwichtenberg gives you an opportunity to move through their area of origin on a stone map.

The Geopark organizes guided tours and excursions for people who are interested in geological evidence and have always wanted to confront the Ice-Age in the form of a real model, or to trace back the natural history of the earth to its early days on the basis of fossil finds. The geological events of the last 25,000 years are also on display in an impressive 3-D presentation in the Müritzeum in Waren/Müritz.

In the course of the earth’s history every region on earth has received its own geological stamp, but only in a few regions is this so clearly visible to the observer. For this reason, the Mecklenburg Ice-Age Landscape Geopark enjoys a membership of the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks.
